WorkFest was the best way I could have spent my first spring break in college. This trip into Appalachia in eastern Kentucky opened my eyes to that region of the United States as well as strengthened my ability to connect with others (and of course learn valuable repairing skills). We repaired residents' homes, but at the end of the trip, I could not tell if we provided more a service to them or them to us. Before going on the trip, the group of us watched videos, discusses the stereotypes of the area, and learned about why the region was impoverished. However, actually going on the trip was more of a learning experience than any of those things combined. Just being able to talk to the homeowners, I was able to see that they valued family and faith above all else, and seeing the differences in how some of the residents live in comparison to how I live was very interesting. It humbled me being able to do service for these people and talk to them about their lives. I look forward to being involved in these types of service in the future while simultaneously interacting with people from all walks of life and learning more about myself. I feel honored and blessed to have been a part of WorkFest, and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to try something new.
